“I’m not just going to be telling my story if it’s not going to take power as well.”

The Why

About this book:

Voices from the Wasteland: A Call to Save Public Higher Education, is a collection of heart-to-heart conversations with students from a vast array of backgrounds who attended the University of Nevada during 2016-2018. Cast against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s campaign and eventual presidency, this project sought to uncover what America truly looks and feels like to people who are on the outside looking in.

The students interviewed in this forthcoming book- the Voices -offer intimate portraits of life in and outside the classroom that will resonate with people across the United States. They tell stories from the trenches of the Wasteland, stories of climbing the rungs of higher education battling familiar barriers such as racism, sexism, poverty, homophobia, xenophobia, and ableism. Though many stories tell of trials and tribulations, Voices is a story of growing and triumphing. Voices from the Wasteland: A Call to Save Public Higher Education suggests a path forward for public higher education as a driver of democracy.
